What is a Starfish?
A starfish is a weird-looking marine creature that lives in the vast depths of the ocean.starfish Starfish have a lot of cool features, but perhaps their ability to regenerate their arms is the most amazing thing they do. This can be used in a number of different ways, from defending themselves from predators to escaping from them.
They don't have brains or blood, and instead use filtered sea water to pump nutrients throughout their bodies.starfish This saves on space and means they never run out of water to eat. They also have a very unusual way of eating, with their stomachs extending out from the body, and a series of tube feet that allow them to ‘crawl’ along the bottom of the sea.
Their skin is made from a hard material called calcium carbonate, and this protects them against predators.starfish It's thick, tough and can be covered in spines — which makes it almost impossible for hunters to break through. They're scavengers, and they feed by lowering their stomachs onto the ocean floor and searching for snails or clams to swallow. They then use cilia lining their arms to guide the liquid-like mollusks into their mouths, located on the underside of their bodies.
While most people associate starfish with the beach, these animals are found in all kinds of places — from tidal pools and rocky shores to coral reefs and sandy sea beds up to 9,000 meters deep. Most starfish have five arms surrounding a central disk-shaped body, although they can grow to have as many as 50. They are the dominant marine animal on tidal pools, rocky shores and sea grass, and play an important role in the life of coral reefs.
Despite their weird appearance, they have a very sophisticated sense of smell, with the tips of their arms lined with pincer-like organs that allow them to find prey in the dark or in the murky depths. They have extra-long tube feet on their arms that help them creep along the sea floor, and they can even change their color to match the environment.
The word'starfish' is actually a misnomer, and the real name for these unique marine creatures is sea stars. They belong to the phylum of echinoderms, which also includes sea urchins, brittle stars and something called a sea cucumber. They don't have gills or scales, and they have more in common with sea urchins and sand dollars than fish do.
When straight men say that a woman they had sex with was a starfish in bed, it's usually code for she wasn't very active or involved during sexual intimacy. However, the term can be referred to in other contexts as well — for example, when someone is described as a "tight little ass starfish," it means that they're not very attractive or physically appealing. However, some women use the term as a way of praising their sex skills, or as a way to show off how good they are in bed.
